Rudolf Rieger is a Writer/Film Producer/Photographer who joined the film industry in 2004 after having been a successful Business Analyst for Swissair and Credit Suisse, a software developer, mentor and visual arts artist.
Parallel to going through the motions of location scouting and capturing actions on set behind the scenes he spent his time on researching Southern Africa’s culture on its indigenous and traditional history. In the process he developed and builds the foundation of some cultural and educational projects. As editor of "On Set Images News", an online newsletter, he signed responsible on publishing local Cape Film, Tourism and Community dynamics.
Africa’s Indigenous Survivors (AIS), “The Khoekhoe Saga”, a story of survival is told in this historical documentary by using a modern 4x4 expedition as the “train” to document South Africa’s passed five centuries. Research starting during 2004, production in 2017. The series of 13-episodes was finalized November 2019. A 7-episodes series was completed during 2022 of which the 1st episode had its premiere in 2023, January 08 on SABC2, a 90 minutes summary feature “34° South” released January 2024. A special screening of 60 minutes each found its way to various film festivals: Ekaterinburg Russia, Bangalore India, African Diaspora in New York and Vancouver and Encounters South Africa.
Remote ancient rural areas were visited counting eighty (80) shooting days by exceeding travels to more than 50 locations. The journey is spiced by the various characters that reflect on oral histories, intangible cultural practices and contemporary struggle for survival portraying South African rich and ever changing landscapes and facades with its breath-taking reflections of color and space.
Rudolf attended numerous courses and Master Classes provided by the Cape Film Commission, the Writers Guild of South Africa and the Documentary Filmmaker Association amongst others Master Courses with TV veteran Tim O’Donnel and Hollywood Script Doctor Peter Russel. He too Studied Screenwriting at Daniel Derckson’s The Writing Studio.
Membership and Engagement
Rudolf, further is CEO of Indigenous Peoples Society of South Africa a non-profit company founded in 2007, member of the Documentary Filmmakers Association, Writers’ Guild of South Africa and General Secretary of the Performing Arts Network of South Africa (2 years). He served Hout Bay, his home town, as Museum Trustee for 5 years, as a Rotarian for 15 years, for several years on the Advisory Board of HBBOF (Hout Bay Business Opportunity Forum) a community based NGO and the National Sea Rescue as crew member during the eighties. Rudolf has been a Jury Member for the South African Film and Television Awards, SAFTAs 2018, 2019 and 2021.
As a passed active member of the Gorachouqua Council of the Khoe and Bushman Nation and on the council of the Western Cape Integrated Indigenous and Traditional Leaders he signed responsible for Media Relations and Logistics.
